Concealed Handgun Permit. Approximately 8 hours. $50.00
This introductory class covers fundamental aspects of pistol ownership, marksmanship, and concealed carry. Topics discussed include:
• Firearm safety.
• Self defense pistol selection.
• Defensive pistol marksmanship.
• Malfunction clearances.
• Concealed carry equipment and use.
• Virginia concealed carry laws and procedures.
• Dry fire practice.
There is no live fire involved in this class and it does satisfy Virginia requirements for a concealed handgun permit. Class runs from 8:45 a.m. to approximately 4:00 p.m. with an hour break for lunch.

Introductory & Concealed Handgun Permit Course

Basic Defensive Pistol. Approximately 5 hours. $90.00
Live fire and accurate shot placement is the focus of this class. To get the most out of it please heed the equipment selection information discussed in the introductory class, and practice with your gear “dry” before the range session.
The class will include:
• Courses of fire from the high ready at 3, 5, and 7 yards.
• Techniques for making rapid, multiple hits on target.
• Precision shooting drills.
• Trigger press and front sight focus work.
• Pistol presentation from holster.
Requirements: A basic understanding of firearm safety and firearm nomenclature. Functional pistol, a holster that works with your pistol (please avoid “one size fits all” and retention holsters), 200 rounds of ammunition for your firearm, a stout belt, magazine carrier, eye and ear protection. Recommended: Baseball style cap, seasonal clothing, shoes or boots that completely cover foot (no sandals, open toes), water, snack, lawn chair.
Basic Defensive Shotgun. Approximately 5 hours. $90.00
Home defense use of a 12 or 20 gauge shotgun will be the emphasis of this class.
This class will include:
• Stance, high and low ready positions.
• Emergency and tactical reloads.
• Patterning with different shotgun loads.
• Spare ammunition carry techniques.
• Multiple targets and courses of extended fire.
• Use of the safety.
Requirements: Functional shotgun, 100 rounds #7, #8, or #9 bird shot, 15 rounds of slug ammo, 15 rounds of 00 ammo, eye and ear protection. Recommended: Baseball style cap, seasonal clothing, shoes or boots that completely cover foot (no sandals, open toes), water, snack, lawn chair.
Basic Defensive Carbine. $90.00
Home defense use of an AR or AK style carbine will be the emphasis of this class.
This class will include:
• Sight in and point of impact considerations.
• Sights over bore axis close in considerations.
• Shooting from prone, sitting, kneeling, and standing.
• Reloading the rifle.
• Use of the safety.
• Loading and remediation of malfunctions.
Requirements: AR or AK style rifle (contact instructor if you’d like to use another firearm), 200 rounds of factory ammo, 3 magazines, means of carrying at least one extra magazine, eye and ear protection. Recommended: Baseball style cap, seasonal clothing, shoes or boots that completely cover foot (no sandals, open toes), water, snack, lawn chair.
Test Drive and Tune Up. 100 to 200 rounds, 2 to 3 hours. $50.00
A flexible class that allows new shooters to learn basic firearm operating skills, and experienced shooter who would like some supervised practice to get range time. Pistol, carbine, rifle, or shotgun shooters are welcome to sign up and may participate in supervised shooting together. I generally find shooter enjoy “show and tell” with their various firearms and most are generous about letting others try out their guns. This class will be loosely structured, the instructor will evaluate student skill levels and have them work at levels commensurate with their abilities. Depending on skill level, shooters may work from a bench/table, out of the holster, employ some movement, or work on other skills as arranged with the instructor.
Up Close, Off the Ground, and One Handed $75
In this 4 to 5 hour live fire class students will be taught retention shooting, will fire at targets off their backs from a defensive position, and shoot with both their dominant and non-dominant hands. One handed slide manipulations, magazine changes, and other considerations will be trained with unloaded firearms.
Prerequisite: one of my live fire classes or verifiable live fire training with a reputable instructor. This is not a beginning class; I will assume you have your gear handled, can operate it safely, and will not require any basic or safety instruction. Any student handling a firearm inappropriately, unsafely, or who does not heed range commands will be asked to leave the course.
Drillapalooza $75
In this 4 to 5 hour live fire class students will be introduced to various shooting drills that can be used to enhance their shooting skills. Some of these drills will introduce a modicum of stress, with the goal being to introduce students to shooting while stressed as a preparation for defensive encounters. Sources for the targets used in these drills will be provided to students so that they can practice them at any range.
Prerequisite: one of my live fire classes or verifiable live fire training with a reputable instructor. This is not a beginning class; I will assume you have your gear handled, can operate it safely, and will not require any basic or safety instruction. Any student handling a firearm inappropriately, unsafely, or who does not heed range commands will be asked to leave the course.
At a Distance, On the Move, and Malfunctions Drills $75
In this 4 to 5 hour class students will be taught how to move forward, rearward, and laterally while firing, will shoot from the 7, 10, and 25 yard lines, and will participate in a “walk back drill” to see at what distance they can reliably make hits on a torso sized target. We’ll also work malfunction clearances and discuss ways to train to promptly remediate malfunctions.
Prerequisite: one of my live fire classes or verifiable live fire training with a reputable instructor. This is not a beginning class; I will assume you have your gear handled, can operate it safely, and will not require any basic or safety instruction. Any student handling a firearm inappropriately, unsafely, or who does not heed range commands will be asked to leave the course.
Close Quarter Defensive Techniques $35
In this 3 hour class students will learn how to interrupt an opponent’s draw stroke, prevent theirs from being interrupted, draw while laying on the ground, draw and fire from the clinch, and remediate malfunctions from the clinch. No live fire will be involved in this class, however students should bring their unloaded pistol and wear their holster. Firearms will have ropes run through the barrel and action to show they are empty, and no ammunition will be allowed in the room.
Wear comfortable clothing and be aware light contact will be made. I will be patting people down to make sure there are no live firearms, knives, or other weapons in the room.
Encounters on Video $10
In this 2 hour class we will view various videos where citizens, both armed and unarmed, were engaged by violent criminal actors. We’ll look at what worked, what didn’t, and how that should inform our training priorities. Warning, the videos will involve real incidents, many of which are not for the faint of heart.
Youth Firearm Safety Class. Approximately 4 hours. $40.00
A survey of firearm safety, firearm types, and action types that provides young shooters a foundation in firearm safety and function.

Drillapalooza $75
